Job Description:

The Hudson Valley Center of Empire State College seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track position in the Arts, which includes the visual arts, music, dance, and theatre.  We seek someone who will welcome the chance to communicate effectively with adult learners over the course of their academic career at the college, using diverse modalities. Faculty mentors work closely with students in both individual and group learning settings, regularly review work with students, and provide narrative evaluations of students' work. The position also entails collaborative work with colleagues at the center level and college-wide, and offers some opportunity for on-line teaching through the Center for Distance Learning, work with the Graduate Programs, and offering studies at other sites in the Hudson Valley Center. The primary location for this position will be in Hartsdale in Westchester County, NY.

Empire State College was founded in 1971 as a comprehensive, public college within the State University of New York.  A recognized leader in offering innovative degree programs for motivated adults, the college enrolls over 18,000 students annually in associate, bachelor's and master's programs at 35 locations across New York State and online.  The college is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and multicultural learning environments.  Faculty work with students in one-on-one, seminar, residency-based and on-line learning modes at the graduate and undergraduate levels; the mix varies by setting.  Central to the faculty role is helping adults from diverse cultural backgrounds design and complete individually designed degrees.   A highly distributed organization, Empire State College makes extensive use of technological applications for communication, teaching and learning, and administrative purposes.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in the arts from a regionally accredited US university or comparable non-US university is required.  Successful candidates must have the ability to direct students in studies in cross-disciplinary areas and the potential to effectively mentor and teach adults from diverse backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participate actively in institutional development, and pursue scholarly interests.  Successful candidates will also have strong communication and computer skills, and effective organizational skills.  Teaching experience at the college level is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience advising college students and/or working with adult learners in a nontraditional setting.

Special Information (i.e., weekend hours, travel, etc.): Regular travel will be required in the fulfillment of center and college-wide commitments.  Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.

 


Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: Salary begins in mid-$60,000 range for beginning assistant professor; higher for more experienced assistant professor or associate professor rank.
